Responding to a summary report on a review carried out by the Domestic Homicide Review panel published today Commissioner Designate for Victims of Crime Geraldine Hanna said:
“In reading the executive summary of the Domestic Homicide Review (DHR) into the murder of Alyson Nelson, published today, my first thoughts are with Alyson’s family and friends.
“This tragic case highlights the extent of harm that can be caused by coercive, controlling, and exploitative behaviour and the risks that can remain even when an intimate partner relationship has ended.
“The Executive Summary highlights the need for greater promotion of the Domestic Violence Disclosure (DVAD) Scheme.
“The DVAD scheme is a crucial tool in allowing those with concerns to make inquiries to check if people they are concerned about have been abusive in past relationships. I support the need for greater promotion of this scheme and the proactive steps that can be taken by police to notify potential victims of risks identified.
“Alyson’s murder was a tragedy. There is a grave responsibility on all of us now to do everything we can to use any and all lessons identified to drive real and lasting change in domestic abuse prevention and response.”
