Racist Violence Only Creates More Victims In Our Communities

Published date:

I am extremely concerned about the ongoing racist violence we are witnessing on our streets. Violence against women and girls is a scourge on our society, but it is not tackled by creating further victims of violence fuelled by racial hatred and prejudice. Every one of us has a fundamental right to safety and security and I would encourage us all to reflect on the terror, fear and trauma inflicted on those men, women and children whose homes and property have been so viciously attacked. People left homeless at the whim of racist thugs.

The impact of these attacks extends far beyond the immediate victims. Across Northern Ireland, those from different nationalities will undoubtedly be feeling vulnerable, anxious and unsafe. Such violence also diverts already stretched police resources away from other vital work needed to support victims of all types of crime. Tragically, police officers themselves have also been victims during this violence and my thoughts are with them and all their colleagues who put their lives at risk protecting us all.

I appreciate the efforts of all of those who are working behind the scenes to support the victims of these attacks and those working to bring about an end to this violence. All of our political leaders and those with influence, must continue to show true leadership and work tirelessly to calm tensions and bring this violence to an end.  The rest of us can also play a part – by reaching out to our neighbours, showing solidarity and support to those who feel threatened and backing the police in their efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Let us unite as one community to demonstrate our support for all victims of crime, by rejecting hate and violence and reaffirming our shared commitment to a peaceful, inclusive and safe society for everyone.
