Passing of Baroness Newlove

Commissioner Designate for Victims of Crime NI Geraldine Hanna said

"I met Baroness Newlove on a number of occasions and every time I was struck by her passion, integrity and commitment to give victims of crime a voice.

“Helen shaped the Commissioner’s Office in England and Wales into a powerful force for good.

“Her tireless drive to make things better was born from personal tragedy following the tragic murder of her much-loved husband Garry, and she was an extraordinary advocate for victims.

“From her campaigning to support victims of anti-social behaviour, to her efforts to make sure the Victims and Prisoners Bill serves victims of crime, Helen will be remembered as someone who made a real difference.

“As a public figure Helen’s legacy will be one of exemplary service, of profound empathy towards the victims she served, and of striving ceaselessly to make the criminal justice system in England and Wales better for victims.

“She was also a warm and kind woman, whose loss will be keenly felt by those who knew and loved her.

“I am, personally, deeply saddened by her passing, and my thoughts are, and remain, with all of her colleagues, friends and family.”
