Framework to End Violence against Women and Girls Must be backed by Significant Resources

The Victims of Crime Commissioner Designate has today called on the Executive to make sure plans to combat violence against women and girls are backed by adequate resources.

Speaking to mark International Women’s Day (8 March) the Commissioner Designate Geraldine Hanna, said that it will take significant resources and a truly cross-cutting approach to tackle the issue of violence against women and girls.

Geraldine Hanna said:

“I was really pleased to see the Assembly recently pass a motion calling on the Executive Office to urgently implement, in full, the Strategic Framework to End Violence against Women and Girls.

“This framework must be resourced properly and I am urging the Executive to be ambitious in their plans.

“We’ve heard the Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mark Rowley say that in England and Wales the issue of violence against women and girls is of such a scale that it will require the same level of funding as that required to combat terrorism.

“I have engaged with dozens of women who have been victims of violent and sexual crimes and it is clear that there is a crisis facing women and girls in our society.

“We have seen a clear determination from our political leaders to combat this scourge and victims of crime welcome that.

“This determination must now be matched with the resources needed to create a society where women and girls can feel safe.”
